Hardwood Flooring Guide
Straight from the forest to your living room, your hardwood floor is a natural wonder which, if installed correctly, can last for generations. A stunning accessory to just about any décor scheme, it’s no wonder that organic hardwood has surpassed decades of fleeting flooring trends.
While hardwood flooring certainly has a lot to offer, the decision to install new hardwood should never be made in haste. Hardwood floors represent a significant investment – one that can add enduring value to your property if chosen and installed properly. That’s why it’s so important to seek some guidance from our group seasoned flooring experts.
Solid Hardwood vs Engineered Hardwood
Today’s consumers can expect to encounter two major groups of hardwood flooring on their next shopping trip: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood.
Solid hardwood is the most traditional choice. With each plank fashioned from a solid piece of wood, this product has remained pretty much the same as it has been for centuries. Solid hardwood remains very popular with homeowners who love redecorating, since this floor can be refinished an infinite number of times. However, these floors cannot be installed in humid spaces, or below grade.
Engineered hardwood is a more recent addition to the flooring market. While it looks and feels pretty much identical to its solid counterpart, engineered hardwood is constructed in multiple layers of wood. This makes for a denser floor- one that often has a water resistant core. Engineered floors are somewhat more affordable and will work well in spaces that fall below grade- including finished basements. They can also be refinished - however, unlike solid hardwood, they can only withstand one or two refinishings.
